Dr. James V. Green

Bio

Dr. James V. Green is Managing Director of Learning and Development for the Idea Factory at the University of Maryland, where he leads education initiatives in entrepreneurship, innovation, product management, and artificial intelligence. He is the founder and director of two online, part-time master's programs, the Master's in Product Management and the Master's in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation, and has more than 20 years of experience designing and scaling undergraduate, graduate, professional, and online learning experiences. Dr. Green has founded multiple University of Maryland academic and professional education programs that have grown from inception to collectively serve more than 5,000 degree-seeking learners each year. His online courses with Coursera and edX have reached more than one million learners worldwide. Over the course of his teaching and mentoring career, students and founders he has worked with have launched more than 100 startups that have collectively raised more than $1 billion in capital at more than $10 billion in total valuations, including Squarespace, FiscalNote, beehiiv, Adonis, Nitra, Schoolytics, and PhiFlow. His teaching and research interests include entrepreneurship education, the psychology of entrepreneurship, innovation under uncertainty, product management, and AI-enabled innovation. He has presented research and educational innovations nationally at conferences including the Academy of Management, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and the American Society for Engineering Education. His work has been recognized with the University of Maryland's Dean's Outstanding Performance Award in Teaching for Professional Track Faculty in 2020 and First Prize in the 3E Learning Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Competition at the 2011 USASBE annual conference. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Green held founder, executive, and operational roles with multiple technology startups, including WaveCrest Laboratories, an innovator in electric and hybrid-electric propulsion and drive systems that was acquired by Magna International; Cyveillance, a cyber intelligence and security software company acquired by QinetiQ; and NetMentors, an online mentoring and tutoring platform for K–12 students. These experiences continue to shape his evidence-driven approach to innovation education, emphasizing customer discovery, experimentation, behavioral learning, iterative decision-making, and the use of AI as a strategic thinking partner. Dr. Green earned a Doctor of Management and Master of Science in Technology Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
